1887 Aug 27 - Birth: Birdie Estella AMONS was born on 27 Aug 1887, a Saturday, at California, Ohio, a SE suburb to Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio to John Julius AMONS [JR] and Carrie Endora BLACK. As with most births in that time frame, she was probably born on the kitchen table with the help of a midwife. Birdie’s parents had been married for six months and twenty-five days. Birdies mother, Carrie, appears to have been tied to the area of Cincinnati known as California. Per the 1887 Hamilton County (Cincinnati), Ohio city directory, John, her father, prior to June 1, was living at 42 W. Court in Cincinnati. It would make sense that Carrie would have gone to her mothers home, Sarah Jane (___) BLACK, in anticipation for the birth.
Father: John Julius AMONS
Mother:
Carrie Endora BLACK

Court Street shown in 1880 is in the upper area of the map. The Ohio River is at the bottom for reference. |
1890 Dec 21 – Family marriage: Birdie’s dads half-brother, Elmer E. GUILD was married in Columbus, Ohio. It is unknown if they attended the marriage.
1893 – Residence: Birdies parents have moved again. This time they are at the southeast corner of Columbia Av and Delta Av.
1894 – Residence: Another family move, this time to 134 Sycamore.
1895 – Residence: Birdie and her parents were living in ‘Room 57 at the Spencer House Bldg’, which was located at the North West Corner of Front and Broadway in Cincinnati, very close to the Ohio River. In 1895 this may have been considered an apartment. The building location, per the streets mentioned in a map search, is now located across the street from or in the ‘Great American Ball Park’ in Cincinnati at 3rd and Broadway at I-71. The 1895 description is at the NWC of Pub. [Public] Landing and Broadway. Note that in 1896 Cincinnati renumbered addresses. 100 numbers were allotted to each square.
This is now where the 'Great American Ball Park' is.
1897 May 26 - Family Marriage: Birdie’s dads half-sister, Ivy Pearl LUCAS, age 18, was married in Cincinnati. It is unknown if Birdie attended the wedding.
1897 by June – Residence: The family was living at 412 Sycamore, Sycamore being one block west of where they were on Broadway. Also living in this building were Francis Belgard a shoemaker, Chas. E. Boyd a salesman, George C. Boyd a postal clerk, Della Ford, Ellen Hill, Thomas Murphy a machinist, Chas Sales an engineer, and Nattie Sayles who was a domestic so there was at least eight rooms, flats or apartments in this building, assuming the two Boyds were living together. There was also at least one business at the lower level. Per the 1898 city directory, at this address there was also a typewriter business. It may have been businesses at the lower level and rooms on upper levels as older buildings were built for.
(Prior to 1896 the 412 address was 132 Sycamore, per the library. Per the 1898 address, the library is in error and has it backwards.)
View in 2011 of where
412 Sycamore would have been in 1898 within Cincinnati, Ohio. Per 2011 it is
currently the ‘Episcopal Diocese of S Ohio’ in a newer building in what is
considered downtown Cincinnati.
1898 by June - Residence: Birdie and her parents were still living at 412 Sycamore in Cincinnati, most likely as renters. Per maps in 2011, this would be at the corner of E 4th Street and Sycamore St. The building also had businesses those most likely being at the 1st level. Today this location appears to be the Episcopal Diocese of S. Ohio in a newer building in what is considered downtown Cincinnati, Ohio.
1898 Prior to Sep 6 - Birdie E. had heart problems. It's impossible to know if she was born with it or when it developed, or of what maladies the family endured due to this medical problem.
1898 Sep 6 – Death: Birdie E., an only child, died on 6 Sep 1898,
a Tuesday, at home at 412 Sycamore in Cincinnati at age 11y 10d from ‘paralysis
of heart’ per the Spring Grove cemetery record.
The health department has her death listed as ‘Heart disease (Mitral)’.
1898 Sep 7 – Obituary: Birdies obituary says, ‘AMONS-Birdie E., the only child of John J. and Carrie E. Amons (nee Black), aged 11 years and 11 days. Funeral Thursday, Sept 8, at 1 p.m. from residence, 413 Sycamore Street, Cincinnati, O.’ The obit appears to have two errors: (1) the age is one day more than the cemetery and health department record and (2) the address of 413 seems to be a newspaper error of one number per other address verifications. What the obituary does show is that the funeral service started at 1PM at home and they arrived at Spring Grove cemetery by 3:30PM.
1898 Sep 8 - Burial: Birdie was buried at 3:30PM on 8 Sep 1898, a Thursday, at Spring Grove Cemetery located at 4521 Spring Grove Ave, Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio. The burial at Spring Grove was ordered by her father, John AMONS [JR] and her paternal grandmother, Johns mother, the former Mrs. Charles GUILD, now Mrs. M.I. LUCAS [Mary Inez (SMITH) AMONS – GUILD - LUCAS], for section 35, lot 112, grave 4, this being the large Charles GUILD lot. The cost to open and close the grave was $6. Records show a ‘Box 5’6” x 26”’ was used. The undertaker was J. Fuldner & Son. Spring Grove Cemetery has Birdie listed as what appears to say ‘Budie’. This appears to be a handwriting fluke. A lot burial map for Spring Grove Cemetery can be seen under Huber GUILD.
1907 Jul 7 – Letter by
Mary Inez, Birdies grandmother: Mary
Inez LUCAS (Mary Inez Smith – Amons – Guild – Lucas) gave written permission to
Spring Grove to have her granddaughter removed from the Charles Guild lot at
Spring Grove. The ‘Mrs C. Amons’ would
be Carrie Amons, Birdies mother who was the wife to John J. AMONS, Mary’s
son. The child was Birdie E. AMONS and
she was later removed to Wesleyan Cemetery where Mary’s son John was
buried. The noted 35-112 refers to
Section 35, Lot 112 at Spring Grove cemetery.
1907 Nov 13 – Letter by
Carrie Amons: Seven days after the
burial of Mary Inez, Birdies paternal grandmother, Birdies mother, Carrie
AMONS, made arrangements with Wm. F. Fuldner, who seemed to be the family
undertaker, to remove Birdie from Spring Grove and rebury her at Wesleyan
Cemetery.
1907 Nov 16 – Removal: Spring Grove Cemetery records state that nine years after death, Birdie was removed from Section 35, Lot 112 at Spring Grove Cemetery and was reinterred at Wesleyan Cemetery, a Methodist cemetery located in Cumminsville ‘six miles from the city’, on Nov 16, 1907, the month that her paternal grandmother was buried next to her in the large Charles GUILD lot at Spring Grove. Birdies father, John J AMONS [JR], had passed and was buried at Wesleyan, a location that Mary Inez, Johns mother, probably wasn’t happy with.
Wesleyan Cemetery, a Methodist cemetery, records show no record of Birdies burial but those records are a mess with many missing items. I know as I (Donna M. ST. FELIX) scanned all cemetery records in color after the LDS did their microfilming. The Department of Health has the burial listed as Wesleyan Cemetery. It is not known what date they did their ‘legal’ card.
Burial at Wesleyan Cemetery is close to the ‘Vault’, the only building on the cemetery
property. Although records of her burial
cannot be found in Wesleyan records, she is most likely by her parents. Currently it is unknown if a headstone exists
for her or her parents. Flat head stones
do not show in the close-up Birds Eye View from bing.com. Her father, John, is buried at Section T, Lot
28, Grave 3E. Birdies mother, Carrie, is
buried with the last name of LACEY in Grave 4E .
